Health Ministry orders suspension of EPI country chie

ISLAMABAD: The Health Ministry on Wednesday directed to suspend within two days the Expanded Programme on Immunisation (EPI) head because he totally failed to successfully run the polio immunisation drives and was unable to control the spread of the polio virus.

The Senate Standing Committee on Health issued these directions in a meeting with Senator Kalsoom Parveen in the chair. The committee expressed displeasure over the non-implementation of its decision to remove the EPI chief, which had been decided in the last meeting. The committee directed the Health Ministry to suspend the EPI chief within two days and also report the suspension to the Senate Secretariat.

The committee also expressed its annoyance over the non-presence of the federal secretary and additional secretary of the Health Ministry in the committee meeting and termed it a joke with parliament. It also directed to serve notices to both the officials for not attending the meeting.

About starting evening classes in medical colleges, the Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC) Registrar Dr Ahmad Nadeem Akbar informed the committee that after a thorough review, it had been decided that the classes should not be started. It had more negative aspects than positive. There was also a shortage of skilled and trained teachers in the medical colleges across the country, he said.

Senator Zahid Khan informed the committee that the standard of private medical colleges was not up to the mark and allowing evening shifts would further deteriorate the situation. He added that there was a lot of mismanagement and corruption in the affairs of the PMDC and stressed the need for taking up all these issues in the sub-committee of health.

The PMDC registrar also informed the committee that through the directives of the Supreme Court, not a single no-objection certificate (NOC) had been issued for the formation of a medical college. “Now any private level medical college will become functional after formal approval from the PMDC,” he said. About Baun Medical College (Khyber Pakhtunkhwa), Akbar informed the committee that despite PMDC’s repeated warning letters about the college not being PMDC affiliated, several students managed to get admission in the college.

The Health Ministry joint secretary briefed the committee about the new pay structure for the Young Doctors Association working under the federal government. The salaries and service structure were made under the pay and pension committee of the federal government. He said the prime minister approved the new pay structure for doctors, paramedics, and other medical staff but these would be implemented in phases.

The committee was of the view that the pay structures for all medical employees should be implemented in one go instead of in phases. They said in Pakistan demands were fulfilled only when people went on strikes. The bureaucracy always created hurdles in smooth functioning of the government and politicians have to face public anger.
